Did you know that 2023 has been designated as the “International Year of Millets”?
● In commemoration of this significant occasion, we are pleased to announce a hybrid seminar centered around the theme of millets:
Title: Millets – How to unlock their potentials to address nutritional, agricultural, and climate challenges
Date & Time : September 26 (Tuesday) 9:30~12:00 (JST)
Venue : Hibikoku Conference Square (Room 8E) + Online
Registration : https://www.jircas.go.jp/en/event/2023/e20230926
Registration Deadline : September 22 (Friday) 17:00 (JST)
This seminar aims to highlight the untapped potential of millets in addressing global challenges, particularly those related to nutrition, agriculture, and climate change. By exploring the climate resilience and nutritional benefits of millets, we aim to raise awareness of their critical role in addressing these pressing issues. Join us to explore the multiple benefits of millets during this engaging event.

■ New Technologies and Research Outputs
————————————————————–
At JIRCAS, our research extends beyond the major cereal crops to include minor cereals and other grass crops. In this issue, we introduce our research results focusing on these lesser-known crops, which are featured in the JIRCAS Research Highlights 2022.
- Phosphate rock-enriched compost with rhizosphere soil increases sorghum yield equivalently to chemical fertilizers
Soils in sub-Saharan Africa are deficient in phosphorus, which is necessary for crop growth.
Combining sorghum crop residues with phosphate ore and soil to make compost produced the same yield increase as conventional chemical fertilizers. - Intergeneric hybrid between sugarcane and Erianthus exhibits superior nitrogen use efficiency than sugarcane
Erianthus, a close relative of sugarcane, can be effectively crossed with sugarcane. The resulting hybrids have deeper root systems and have a greater capacity to absorb more nitrogen nitrogen absorption due to their deeper roots. It is hoped that this hybrid will lead to the development of sugarcane varieties with deeper roots and consequently higher yields.
